Hmm.. this map looks more like a rpg map than a real meleemap. There are to much minerals in the main bases (moneymap?!) The startpoints are everything except balanced and as on the bottom right position almost impossible to attack.

It's always hard to balance 8 player maps but this is a raelly unbalanced map. Dunno what to say, another thing would be, that some got an expansion in front of their base, some not.

Heh, it wasn't really intended to be an RPG map or a money map; was just intended to last for a long time. It was also intended to be somewhat realistic as far as being comparable to real world terrain (with the exception of the lower left and right corners which are nearly identical).

I went ahead and drasticly reduced the resources at the start points and expansion areas. I also tried making the lower right and left corners more accessible by land. I added ramps to the plateaus with resources on them as well. I also adjusted the gas placement according to the advice of "The Gas Issue" article.

The start locations are horribly unbalanced, the map is WAY to big, the start locations, and the rest of the map for that matter are really ugly, and a bunch of other things, no melee map should be 256x256

Yeah np. As it says. The newest updates (including comments) after old maps should be revisited sometimes, or other mappers stumble over maps with gained knowledge and so new ideas. Not a big deal ;)

Still this map is just as it is... isnt it? ^^

this is only experimental. the broodwar we know and love is not well on a map like this. too big, too tight, ugly minerals. it's just not well. not up to par in today's maps.

Make all main bases start under the same terrain and circunstances. Why orenge has so many close expansions? Is that the player with the most expansions? I mean, he can get like 6 expansions easly while others can bearly get one. where's yellow's natural expansion? do you know whats a natural expansion? Why brown, red and blue have to strugle so much to get out of their base? man you shoud really think of stuff like that before making a map. U got potential, just keep practicing and read Panshack's article about map making. You need to make ALL mains have the same terrain, the same expansion distance, and the same playability. Each player has the right to play equally to the rest of the players. Dont put expansions closer to a player than to another. Try to make all main bases the same size and try to make them get their men outside easly, as the rest of the main bases.

And also, try to make a map with a reasonable concept. Dont just put some random terrain and expansions arround the map, as I said before, its important for you to know that ALL players must have the same circunstances while playing.

So next time, try to think of it a little bit. Making a player bigger than the rest or with the most space than the others really screws up your map making. Dont worry, I was just like you when I started making maps.

in theory you dont even have to follow these rules.

i'd like to see somebody try to make a map, even a 2 player map, where both starts are drastically different yet try to balance them _without making them the same_. that would be cool as fuck.

There was that one map that was basically 4 corners of different proleague maps pieced together, and was drastically different in each spawn yet was somewhat balanced... Anyone remember?
