Maps' Mainbases

I've been watching alot of replays of lots of top players around the world and seemed to notice something that just about every one of them does, especially the zerg.

They don't use alot of building space in their mains. Most of their primary buildings, like the supplies and unit making buildings, are built in their naturals (mainly so that they can eventually wall) as well as expos. I mean, a large portion of a map's building space is consumed by a player's mainbase, but just about every good player in this world doesn't even use half of it.

So here's what popped up in my mind: maybe on our maps, especially the four player ones, we could make smaller mainbases? Because not alot of it will be used anyways and that more space can be devoted into adding more stuff into other parts of the map? Because what's the point of having big mains if when during a game players, especially the zerg ones, only use a fraction of its space?

I dunno, I've only really noticed that in some people. For zerg, they probably put their spire or lair at their natural because they can better defend there than in base from, say, a fast dt drop. But I still notice a lot of building of factories and gateways in the mainbase. Only game I saw where protoss has more gateways outside of their main is in rA vs Oov where all his gates were by natural of RHIII and on Neo-Forte, because the main only fits like 2-3 gateways.

So, they probably only do it if there is a lot of space by their natural or for special builds, not normally.

And MA, what reps are you watching and of who?

It happened on several replays, but the replays in which i finally realized this were the blizzcon ones, in particular Mondragon vs Reach on Roads to Antigas Prime.

Well as a terran player I can only say that I appreciate big main bases a lot. If you force me to build somewhere else (which I would not normally), you shift the balancing towards my opponent. So think of that whenever you work with small main bases.

yes, large mainbases > small ones.

the mainbases on illusion have proven to be quite nice and comfortable, and only a bit too large, which doesn't disturb as it isn't like paradoxx :D.

I don't like main bases that are stretched too much,because it's quite difficult to place the buildings correctly.

The main should be medium sized with a nice compact area of building space.If there is no space in the main I build at the natural.

I think Terrans build barracks at the expansions to always have a small group of units to defend it if the zerg attacks.

have less space at the natural and more building space around the map. a lot of maps here dont have any spots to do hidden proxys or really building outside of the main because people like to draw on the minimap with unbuildable terrain.
