BWMN community

I have 2 things to say about the site/community here.

The first one, is a proposal.
I think some of the guys here who represent could make blogs on the different sites (like TL and GosuGamers) posting the current map trends on the site and the ones winning competitions. Each post with a photo of the map, link to the map thread and an explanation of the map concept, balance and details.
I think this is a better approach to spreading the word of the map making community than posting and promoting a map of your own. It was proved that it doesn't matter the promotion you give to your map, it'll always find resistance among some people which will translate to 'hate' replies and a general bad feeling about new non-pro maps. Posting in the blogs sections will get the attention of those who will be really interested (but yes, less views too).

Second, is a critic (abut also a proposal)

The objective of the site is to be a place were one can upload your own map to make it known and get comments on how to make it better. I think that the comments part is the one that should be fixed. As they are now one can just put what they thought of it without any brain work or proof of what one was saying. This didn't work bad since there weren't many people around and most of them offered usually good feedback. But with differences between mappers and more people coming to the site this method is not working as good as it should. Changing the rules that comments on maps should have a certain structure and follow some guidelines would help to get better feedback in maps threads. For example, separating just mere opinions (like i don't like neutral buildings in that part of the map) to issues that need to be addressed, and why they should be (like distances inside a map or position imbalances, with the appropriates GMCS)
Also, implementing digg-like voting system will reward those who give constructive criticism.
If this is too complicated to implement on this site, take it into account for the new SC2 site.

So there, my 2 cents (again).

well, it certainly would be wise to cut down the one-sentence-posting and the smalltalk in the very mapthreads. if you could actually delete the comments (not only turning them to invisibility) and a more or less a guidline to what a post should include, this would definetly increase the professionality and improve the focus on working-on-maps on this site.

but it would also remove part of the fun of bwmn.

And essentially make mapping less attractive.

it should be like the comments on thottbot.com where you can vote if a comment is good or bad. if it is of no use and gets voted bad, it will turn invisible and require a manual click to be read. If its good and gets plus votes, it will instead become highlighted and easier to spot.

You hilight and emphasize the power of the majority though, and squelch the minority thoughts. Rarely is majority thought inherently beneficial.

tl;dr gay

no comments about the first part? regular blogs on other sites?

Well, in theory map threads are for comments about the maps but in practice someone makes some comment that irks someone else and the thing escalates into a post/counter post frackas or posters sometimes go on a tangent or just joke around (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa).

: ^ (

With regards to voting on comments I am not sure we will have enough votes or people bothering to vote. Also comments like "gas issue" are valid comments but may not be worth voting for. We could have a "post police" person but he would have to have the power to invisible or delete even unappropriate comments of fellow admins. It just gets too complicated.

I guess that we will all just have to work hard on sticking to making only map comments on map thread and moving all the other stuff to the forums.

Blogs are a good idea, I'll make one sometime soon when I have the time.
